WhatsApp is a free messaging app you can use to keep in touch with friends and family.

If you’re tired of racking up fees and fines for texting and data usage, WhatsApp is for you! With this app all you need is a mobile device like a phone or tablet and an internet connection.

With WhatsApp you’ll never have to pay for calls, and you’ll be able to enjoy all the great things you love about phones like picture and video sharing, voice messages and texting. It’s important to point out that there are no subscription fees to use the service but this is an ad-supported app so expect to see ads from time to time when making calls.

It's important to note that while the latest version of the app supports Android Wear, you don't need an Android device to use it. Just create an account and log into the new WhatsApp Web version on any browser to check missed messages and calls, download files and everything else you do with the regular WA app.

Another great feature that we love about this app is the ability to send your location to your contacts! If you’re ever lost or need to give someone directions, all you have to do is send them your location and they’ll get detailed instructions on how to find you.

By far the best feature of this app is the ability to save your chats automatically to your Google Drive, so you’ll never have to worry about losing your history again.

While we love the app, it’s important to point out that it only works with other WA users – if your friends and family won’t create an account, it won’t work. This also won't replace your traditional phone; you won't be able to dial 911 through WhatsApp in an emergency, for example.

All in all, there’s a lot to love about this little chat app! It’s free, it’s easy to use, it works on virtually every platform and device, and it lets you do just about everything you’d expect it to do as long as you have an internet connection.

WhatsApp Messenger is a fun application that uses the WhatsApp service for instant contact in many forms with family and friends.

WhatsApp Messenger is somewhat similar to older Skype apps. However, it has more features and messaging options than they did. You can instantly video call family members, send friends text messages, and send photo and video messages for free. You can even do audio calls that are essentially phone calls, but they use data rather than phone minutes. This makes communication more accessible for prepaid users if they have access to a good internet connection.

WhatsApp Messenger recently surpassed one billion installs, and it's easy to see why. It has the most supported communication mechanisms out of any of the competition, and there's not even a paid tier. Of course, it contains some advertising and sponsored product placement, but the advertisements are not intrusive, and the benefits certainly outweigh this.

There are many corresponding apps from WhatsApp for different operating systems, so even if your friends use iPhones, you'll still be able to communicate. WhatsApp Messenger has also had some recent, major overhauls. For example, it now plays videos right away rather than downloading them. It used to require superior internet connection, but now anyone with almost any connection can use it, save for extremely slow (sub-3G) connections.

The one major downside to this product is that it does require an internet connection. If you're always in a city or somewhere else with WiFi, you'll be fine. However, some rural areas have only voice support, and you'll be unable to use WhatsApp Messenger in that case.

Pros

  • Completely free communication
  • Supports every major platform

Cons

  • Requires internet connection
  • Is not intended for emergency calls
